Education/Curriculum

Heartland Head Start uses a developmentally appropriate curriculum. Curriculum development and ongoing assessment allow teachers to track children's progress and develop the program accordingly. The teachers also develop sub-themes to explore new ideas which appeal to both child and teacher:

Parent/Staff Teamwork

Although the teachers are a very important part of your child's education, Head Start believes that parents are the first and most important teachers of their children. As children learn to solve problems for themselves, they gain self?esteem and respect for others. These are some of the best tools a child can have for successful educational and life experiences.

Every child participates in developmental screening. This enables parents and staff to work together to encourage development of the child's talents and to give support to the areas that might need extra work. The DIAL-R screening tool is used for the initial screening. The LAP-R assessment tool is also used to determine each child's developmental progress. This information, along with parental input, is used to set goals for each child. The assessment is ongoing in order to evaluate progress and develop new goals.
